Farewell~

Farewell my dear friends, for i might just possibly die within the next three weeks. Between now and then, i have four exam, two quizzes, two papers, and a research paper to work on. If i live to tell the tale three weeks from now, i demand to be treated to a sushi buffet. *coughhinthenryhintcough*. 🙂

Anyway, i spent all of friday watching this new drama–Good Fortune Happy Life starring Joe Chen En Qiao and Blue Lan. It’s quite interesting and addicting, but after episode ten, it kind of just dips down in my opinion. I feel like they’re dragging it too much cause really, a lot of things could have been easily solved or been left out to make it end faster without dragging it out like crazy. However, as a result of watching it, i now have a new celebrity crush–Mister Roy Qiu. Gosh he’s dreamy and hot (after he shaves, that is, and his hair, i can just ignore).

But anyways, yesterday, i went to Philly to buy mooncakes and fruits for the moon harvest festival next saturday, in preparation for SASA’s first campus wide event. Then i spent the afternoon doing hw and continued watching dramas at night. As a result, i was stuck with studying for two exams today. I finally finished studying for econometrics, but i’m reluctant to study financial markets. I absolutely hate it. It just doesn’t make sense to me no matter how hard i try to understand it.

But i’m getting distracted. Really, i just want to curl up in bed and watch the rest of Good Fortune Happy Life right now.

It’s time for Animaniacs and we’re zaney to the max!

I still remember when back to school shopping entailed buying the 10 cents notebooks that Staples had on sale. Today, back to school shopping is basically when students look for the best discounts on laptops or personal computers. During the last twenty years, technology had evolved greatly. Ten years ago, I was still going to the library daily for good books to read and for research sources—fast forward ten years and now I’m completing research assignments without even having to leave my dorm room. However, along with the evolution of technology comes a new wave of mediums through which we seek entertainment from. From cable television to the internet—multimedia and entertainment are available to us at the tip of our fingers. Many parents have argued that the multimedia and entertainment outlets that surround their children these days have a negative impact to their children, cueing the advent of theories such as the mean world syndrome, where people’s thoughts and perspectives about the world completely change due to the television they watch. However, growing up in the midst of all of these multimedia and entertainment sources made me witness both negative and positive impacts on my generation.

When I was little, I used to want to be the Pink Ranger or a Disney princess when I grew older. The Animaniacs took me from country to country every afternoon while Pokemon taught me the value of friendship and to never try to take a short cut in life like Jesse and James of Team Rocket. Cartoons were my main source of entertainment and it helped fuel the imagination that I had as a child. Good days were when there were new episodes of the shows were broadcasted, bad days were when there were only reruns or when the shows were cancelled for other purposes. However, as time passed by, Animanics was cancelled due to its controversial content while Power Rangers ended and weird alternative spin offs came about. But the one big thing that actually happened was that i grew up. Shows like Power Rangers and Animaniacs were no longer shows i watched because it became embarassing to admit that you were in the 5th grade and still watching Cartoons–now it was time to watch the more adult programs like Sabrina the Teenage Witch and 7th Heaven. As time continued on, prime time programs that used to be direct for children like me began switching over to other shows with more adult content like Friends and CSI. Children began becoming exposed to mature content–content not suitable for their innocent minds.  As a result, kids began maturing at a very early age–concepts that had taken me years to grasp they were able to recite off the tips of their tongues.

I actually have no idea where i was trying to go with this essay but i didn’t want to scrap the whole thing so i thought i’d post it here. Anyone want to contribute thought the idea of children and the media and the evolution of the media we had aged since the beginning of the 1990’s?
