Innocence

I’m extremely impressesd by how ridiculous some people can be.

First of all, if it’s YOUR project, why would you expect OTHER people to complete and plan it for you? Second of all, if i only said that i’d partially sponsor you up to a sum of $300, why would you think that i would increase it at all–especially when i KNOW it does NOT take more than $250 to cater a lunch from the restaurant?! Third of all, DOES IT LOOK LIKE I HAVE A FRIGGIN CAR TO BE YOUR CHAUFFER?! and Finally, WHAT DO YOU MEAN YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO SEND ME A GODFRIGGIN EMAIL WITH THE DETAILS OF YOUR EVENT?! You have time to read my email, you have time to call, but you don’t have FRIGGIN TIME TO SEND ME AN EMAIL WITH TWO LINES?!

Dude, you are ridiculous.

However, the topic today is not on my irritation, but rather, on Innocence.

I engaged in an interesting class discussion today about innocence–and by that, i mean a child’s innocence. The question was, whether or not children need innocence. In today’s society, we live in one where laws or regulations to protect our children from obscenity online would become infringments on our freedom of expression to some. Some argue that such regulations should be left up to parents to regulate and to decide and that the government should play no rule in deciding what we should and shouldn’t look up or read or watch online. However, those who argue in favor of that also question why we need to protect our children. If they are going to grow up and learn everything already, then why do we have to lie to them in order to protect them from learning it earlier? Why can’t we just leave everything out in the open and allow our children to reason through what they personally think they should and should not know? Why prevent something that becomes inevitable even for a second? If children are bound to be exposed to obscenity, why protect them from it and try to maintain their innocence? They’re going to lose it anyway.

Personally, i don’t know how i feel. I feel like if the child wanted to know, regardless of what other try to do, the child will find out anyway. However, i feel like we SHOULD protect a child’s innocence, even if it’s only for a few years because at least they’ll have those 2-3 years (hopefully longer) to look back on and to reflect on the days when life was simple and carefree–life when they still have their innocence.

I don’t know…what do you think?
